A Moody December Wedding at Camino Real Ranch: Jenn & Billy

Black dresses, moody overcast skies, and a tattoo artist booked solid all night—Jenn & Billy's non-traditional wedding at Camino Real Ranch was everything an intimate celebration should be.

Some weddings follow the script—white dress, big bridal party, ceremony and reception with 150 people watching it all. And some couples say "hell no" to the script and create a day that breaks the standard mold.

Jenn & Billy's December 14th wedding at Camino Real Ranch was the latter. After 10 years together, they knew exactly what they wanted: a day that was relaxed, intimate, full of love, and completely non-traditional.

A black dress. No formal bridal party. An intimate ceremony with just their closest people, then 120 friends rolling in for the reception. Cold, overcast skies that made for moody, cinematic photos. And a tattoo artist booked solid from cocktail hour until the last song played.

This is what happens when a couple designs their wedding day around what they actually want, not what they're "supposed" to do.

The Vision: A Day That Felt Like Them

When planning their wedding, Jenn and Billy wanted a celebration that honored their relationship, their people, and their style.

That meant a few things right off the bat:

No bridal party. Jenn had her friends hang out and get dressed with her (along with her daughter), but nobody had to buy a specific dress or stand in a line during the ceremony. I did this for my own wedding too, and I love this approach—it keeps everything relaxed & low-pressure in both the leadup and on the day itself.

Intimate ceremony, big reception. They kept the ceremony small—fewer than 20 people—so it felt sacred and personal. Then, 120 friends showed up for the reception to celebrate. This setup gave us time after the ceremony to explore the property for couples portraits and gave Jenn and Billy some breathing room before the party started.

A black dress. Jenn wore a stunning black dress that coordinated perfectly with the black exterior of Camino Real Ranch. It was bold, it was her, and it looked incredible in photos.

The entire day had this intentionality to it—not in a rigid, over-planned way, but in a "we thought about what we actually wanted and then did that" way.

Getting Ready: Calm Before the Celebration

The morning was calm. Jenn got ready with her daughter and close friends—no matching robes, no choreographed poses, just real moments of excitement and anticipation.

This is one of my favorite parts of weddings without a traditional bridal party: the getting-ready photos feel less staged and more like you're just hanging out with your people before one of the biggest days of your life. There's no pressure to perform, and that ease shows up in the photos.

Billy's getting-ready session had the same energy—relaxed, genuine, a little bit of nervous excitement.

The Ceremony: Just the People Who Matter Most

The ceremony was short, sweet, and deeply personal. Fewer than 20 people stood witness—just their closest family and friends.

The interior of Camino Real worked perfectly for their wedding day - their friends & family sat in an arch around them, enveloping them with love throughout the moment.

After they said their vows, we had time. Time to explore the property, time for couples portraits, time for them to just be for a minute before the reception energy kicked in. That breathing room is rare on a wedding day, and it's one of the biggest benefits of keeping the ceremony intimate.

Couples Portraits: Moody, Cinematic, Them

Camino Real Ranch has this modern desert vibe—desert succulents, clean architectural lines, and that distinctive black exterior. The overcast skies brought out the moodiness of the landscape, and Jenn's black dress tied everything together visually.

We briefly stepped outside into the brisk December weather to snag some shots outside, then moved to the bridal suite to warm up, grab some photos, then give them some time alone as I set up our final shot.

The photos from this session are some of my favorites from the entire day. Jenn and Billy were fully present, fully themselves, and the environment matched the energy they wanted—a little moody, a lot romantic, completely unforgettable.

The Reception: 120 Friends and a Tattoo Artist

Here's where things got really fun.

Jenn and Billy didn't just book a DJ and call it a day. They booked a tattoo artist and included complementary tattoos for any guest who wanted to get one of the custom flash designs the artist brought. The artist was straight booked from cocktail hour to the end of the night.

The flash designs were personal to Jenn and Billy's story—lego flowers and characters, and landscapes reminiscent of the Pacific North West. Guests were lining up all night to get inked, and it created this incredible energy in the room.

Billy got his first tattoo ever during his own wedding reception, Jenn got one too, & Jenn's daughter got her first tattoo. It was a whole family tattoo session in the middle of a wedding, and it was such a fun moment to capture for them.

Camino Real Ranch has two separate spaces on the property, which worked perfectly for this setup. One building had the dance floor and the main reception energy. The other became the tattoo lounge—guests could take a break from dancing, grab a drink, people-watch, and watch their friends get tattooed. The flow between the two spaces kept the night dynamic and gave people options for how they wanted to engage.

The whole night was buzzing with energy—dancing, tattooing, laughing, celebrating. Exactly what a wedding reception should be.

Why Camino Real Ranch Works for Non-Traditional Weddings

If you're looking for a venue that can handle an intimate ceremony and a bigger reception—and you want a space you can customize and decorate to your exact vision—Camino Real Ranch is worth a look.

It's located in Dale, Texas, about 25 miles from downtown Austin (close enough to be convenient, far enough to feel like you've left the city). The aesthetic is modern desert meets Texas landscape—think minimalist, clean lines, lots of natural light, and that striking black exterior that photographs beautifully.

The two separate spaces on the property give you flexibility. You can keep the ceremony intimate in one area and open up the reception space to a bigger crowd. Or use one building for dinner and dancing, and the other for a lounge, a bar, or—in Jenn and Billy's case—a tattoo station.

It's a venue that works if you want to do something different. If your idea of a perfect wedding day involves black dresses, moody skies, and a tattoo artist instead of a photo booth, Camino Real gets it.

What I Loved About This Wedding

I've photographed countless weddings, and the ones that stick with me are the ones where the couple fully commits to doing it their way.

Jenn and Billy didn't compromise on what they wanted. They kept the ceremony small so it felt sacred. They skipped the bridal party so the day stayed low-pressure. They brought in a tattoo artist because it was fun and meaningful to them. They embraced the cold, overcast December weather and leaned into the moody vibe.

The result? A wedding day that felt deeply personal, visually stunning, and completely unforgettable.

If you're planning a wedding that doesn't fit the mold—if you want something intimate, non-traditional, and unapologetically you—take notes from Jenn and Billy. Your wedding day should feel like your day, not a performance of what you think a wedding is supposed to look like.
